The state of New York prohibits any insurer from discriminating against anyone on the sole basis that they have been a victim of domestic violence. This includes:
- Refusing to issue, renew, deny, or cancel an insurance policy
- Demanding higher insurance premiums or increasing premiums
- Using status as a victim of domestic violence as an underwriting criterion
- Discriminating in the fees or commissions of agents for writing or renewing a policy for victims of domestic violence

This right extends to a child’s parent or guardian if the covered person is the child.
